Cranial nerves of Human
  • There are 12 pairs of cranial
nerves in humans. They emerge directly from the brain and brainstem and are numbered with Roman numerals I–XII:
I – Olfactory (smell)
II – Optic (vision)
III – Oculomotor (eye movement, pupil constriction)
IV – Trochlear (eye movement)
V – Trigeminal (facial sensation, chewing)
VI – Abducens (eye movement)
VII – Facial (facial expression, taste)
VIII – Vestibulocochlear (hearing and balance)
IX – Glossopharyngeal (taste, swallowing)
X – Vagus (controls many organs like Heart,lungs, stomach,neck ,thorax,abdomen, swallowing, voice)
XI – Accessory (neck and shoulder movement)
XII – Hypoglossal (tongue movement.
Note :
  • Sensory nerve -3, Olfactory,Optic and Vestibulocochlear (auditory)
  • Motor nerve5,Oculomotor, Trochlear,Abducens,Accessory and Hypoglossal
  • Mixed nerve4, Trigeminal,Facial,Glossopharyngeal and Vagus.
Sensory nerves – Nerves that carry sensory information/impulse from the body parts to Brain.
Motor nerves: Nerves that carry singnals from( Brain ) Central nervous system to muscles and glands to enable movement and other functions.
Mixed nerve: Nerves that contain both sensory and motor fibers and perform the functions of both sensory and motor nerves.
