What is X-ray Mammography

X-ray Mammography (often spelled “mammography,” not “memography”) is a specialized X-ray examination of the breasts used to detect and diagnose breast diseases, especially early-stage breast cancer.

What is Mammography?

It uses low-dose X-rays to create detailed images (mammograms) of breast tissue.
It can detect abnormalities such as:
Breast cancer
Lumps or masses
Microcalcifications (tiny calcium deposits)
Cysts and other breast changes
Why is it done?
Screening Mammography – for women without symptoms to detect cancer early.
Diagnostic Mammography – when there is a lump, pain, nipple discharge, or another breast concern.
How is the test performed?
The breast is placed between two plates and gently compressed.
X-ray images are taken from different angles.
The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes.
Advantages
Detects breast cancer at an early stage.
Improves treatment outcomes.
Quick, non-invasive examination.
Types
Digital Mammography
3D Mammography (Breast Tomosynthesis).
For a radiography student or technician, mammography is considered a specialized X-ray technique designed special film for breast imaging with high contrast and low radiation dose-
  • Low dose ( 20-30KvP) (mAs 20-200)
  • Minimum filtration of beam
  • Small focal spot (0.6mm and  1.2mm)
  • Fine grain film- Single emulsion film with single screen.
