Vitamins’ chemical name & Function
Vitamins are substances that our body needs to grow and develop normally.
There are two types
1. Fat-soluble vitamins – A,D, E,K
2. Water-soluble vitamins – Vitamin C and all B vitamins are water-soluble.
1. Vitamin A – Chemical name- Retinol.
Function – good for eyes, teeth, and skin.
Deficiency – Night blindness.
Sources– carrot, spinach,milk ,sweet potatoes, brocoli ,pumpkin ,eggs meat(liver).
2. Vitamin B1– chemical name -Thiamine .
Function– help in Breaking down blood sugar.
Deficiency– Beriberi
Sources – Cereal grains, sunflower seeds, brown. rice,cauliflower,potatoes,liver,eggs.
3. Vitamin B2 – chemical name – Riboflavin.
Function– Growth and development of body cell.
Deficiency– Inflammation of the lips and fissures in the mouth.
Sources – Bananas, milk, meat, fish, green beans.
4. Vitamin B3– chemical name Niacin .
Function– for cells to grow and work properly.
Deficiency– diarrhea, skin changes, and intestinal upset.
Sources– milk, eggs, tomato, vegetables, carrots, nuts, and seeds.
5. Vitamins B5 – chemical name Pantothenic acid.
Function – for producing energy and hormones.
Deficiency– Paresthesia (Tingling or prickling)
Sources– Whole grains, broccoli, meat.
6. Vitamin B6 – chemical name Pyridoxine
Function– formation of red blood cells.
Deficiency – Anemia
Sources – Bananas, spinach, milk, fish, chicken, squash, and nuts.
7. Vitamin B7 / H – chemical name Biotin
Function– it is metabolic proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, it also gives keratin as a protein in skin , hair, nails .
Deficiency – Dermatitis, hair fall
Sources – Spinach, broccoli, egg, yolk, liver, cheese.
8. Vitamin B9 – Chemical name Folic acid ( Folate).
Function – for making DNA & RNA.
Deficiency – During pregnancy, this can affect the fetus’s nervous system, Doctors recommended folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy.
Source – Vegetables, peas, liver, some fortified grains, sunflower seeds, and fruits.
9. Vitamin B12 – chemical name Cyanocobalamin.
Function – Essential for a healthy nervous system.
Deficiency – Neurological problem and Anemia.
Sources– Vegetables, fish, meat, dairy product, fortified soy products, yeast.
10.Vitamin C – chemical name Ascorbic acid.
Function – Immunity power increases, wound healing, and bone formation, and acts as an antioxidant.
Deficiency – Scurvy, bleeding in gums, loss of teeth, wound healing.
Sources – citrus fruits, vegetables.
11. Vitamin D – chemical name Calciferol .
Function – It helps regulate the calcium and phosphate in the body, and the health of bone, teeth, and muscles.
Deficiency– Rickets and Osteomalacia.
Sources – Exposure to the sunlight, fatty fish, eggs, and mushrooms.
12. Vitamin K – chemical name Phylloquinone.
Function – It is necessary for blood clotting.
Deficiency – Unusual bleeding, poor bone development, osteoporosis.
Sources – Leafy vegetables, meat, egg, soybeans.
13. Vitamin E – chemical name Tocopherol
Function – It is an antioxidant and keeps the immune system strong against viruses and bacteria.
Deficiency – difficulty in walking coordination, muscle pain, weakness, unwellness.
Sources– Nuts and seeds, vegetables, almonds, eggs, sunflower seeds.
